What Are Louvers? How Louvers Work?


A louver is a type of grille which covers an opening used for air intake or air transfer. A major application is the storm louver, used in the outside wall of a building for air intake or exhaust.


This device is designed to keep out rain, etc., while allowing air to pass through (Figure below).

PARTS OF LOUVERS


Within a building the storm resistance is not needed; but where the louver is used for air transfer through doors or walls, the louver blades should be arranged to be sight-proof.

Exterior louvers are usually selected for a face velocity of 500 to 700 ft/min, while transfer louvers and grilles are selected for a low pressure drop, usually resulting in a face velocity of 200 to 300 ft/min.

In regions where fine powder snow conditions occur, or where moist air turns to ice crystals as the velocity changes, louvers may be ineffective at eliminating entrained moisture. Filters loaded with water, or plugged by snow or ice, are occasionally observed.
